There are lots of narrow tunnels carved through solid rock like this in the park!
This is a shot through one of the tunnels showing Mt. Rushmore. It was taken by John Sundby & John Blank. This was before a lot of trees have grown up behind the tunnel, you can still see the Presidents narrowly thru the trees. This was off a post card you can purchase at the park.

The Indian name for this rock is Taishwa Falinemiatoc, Best translated into english as (Large Broken Phalus) ..... or in more modern time ....(Viagra Rock!) .... hee-hee!
